What could be cooler than buzzing around town in an electric scooter made from hemp? Nothing really, which is why Van.Eko’s Be.e scooter is causing such a stir. The scooter made its debut in late June 2013 at a display in the Netherlands, which is where the collaborators who worked on the scooter are based. Van.Eko, design studio Waarmakers, Nabasco NPSP Biocomposites and students from InHolland University teamed up in 2007 to explore the creation of bio-based materials, specifically for use in lightweight vehicles like scooters. Six years later they’ve succeeded in creating the Be.e. The unique construction of the body of the scooter eliminates the need for a frame and the multiple plastic parts used in most scooters today. Instead, the flax and bio-resin external skin supports the load of the scooter in a fashion similar to the mechanics of an eggshell. The Be.e comes complete with a 4kW motor, a battery with an 8-year life span, LED lighting, USB charging and GPS tracking. Although Van.Eko does not plan to mass-produce or sell the scooters due to production costs, they do plan to rent them out in the Netherlands using a system similar to that of AirBnB.

Alexander McQueen has teamed up with The Rug Company to create a seven-piece collection of stunning rugs, wall hangings and cushions. The series of pieces is inspired by Creative Director Sarah Burton’s inaugural Spring 2011 collection. Her inspiration came from the deconstruction of natural inspirations, like butterflies, peonies and poppies. The result is an assemblage of spellbinding patterns that represent the organic inspirations in a basic and elemental fashion. Burton has described the collection as “both bohemian and pagan in spirit.” Her Spring 2011 collection titled Folklore focused on decay in nature and featured very light and tender details, like partially disintegrated feathers and clustered butterflies. The collection was her first for the Alexander McQueen brand after the unexpected death of McQueen in February 2010. The Rug Company has stayed true to these original inspirations, continuing the theme of tenderness and elegance in the simplicity of nature. In the past The Rug Company has worked with top designers like Diane von Furstenberg, Paul Smith, and Vivienne Westwood. Available starting this November, the Alexander McQueen rugs will be sold exclusively through The Rug Company’s showrooms.
